Early EducatIon and Care

In 2019 we created more reach through expansion of our footprint.

This year we opened Discovery House, Canberra and Mayfield providing an additional

places for children each week.

representing a

%

increase in total licenced places.

As our reach expands, we would like to offer some important thanks.

Gowrie NSW would like to thank the

families that we built authentic and meaningful connections with.

We provided early education and care for

unique children across our 8 long day care centres.

Who did the actual work?

That would be the

early childhood teachers and the

permanent educators we employ in our early education centres and the

casual educators who back them up.

(And of course the support staff that keep all our centres running)

We are proud of our all of our staff. We are proud of our teachers and educators.

Teachers like AnTI, Gowrie’s specialist outdoor teacher at Erskineville.

Many have asked what exactly the outdoor teacher position means. When children see you doing things, they can work it out, “You’re always outside. You love the plants.”

“I am a teacher, but instead of being responsible for a cohort within a room, I teach all ages, sharing my time around the whole outdoor space.” Anti says that his teaching is about how and what we can learn from the environment and when. “The changes and challenges are given to us in the form of weather and seasons, and how everything behaves and responds to this.”

Gowrie’s people are amazing.

People like JANET, our chef at our new Mayfield centre.

Janet often takes the fresh ingredients in to the children as part of the curriculum to bring the cooking process to life with the children. This encourages children expand their palate, try new tastes and ingredients they are not familiar with and helps to develop a healthy and positive attitude toward food.

Our Team want as many children as possible to experience a Gowrie centre.

We know that participation in an early learning centre is critical to children’s development.

Educators CARLY, GEMMA and MADELINE from our regional Dubbo centre, have a strong belief that it is every child’s right to be included in a high quality program where they can thrive. That’s why they worked hard to address the barriers that often affect children and their families by ensuring their service integrated a transport service. It’s a great example of how our teams go above and beyond to ensure children are included and they belong.

We employ great teachers.

Teachers like AImee the Marri-Gili room leader in our Erskineville centre. Aimee is committed to a sense of calmness and deep respect towards her work with infants and toddlers. Aimee says “We allow children to make their own choices, encourage them to be independent and autonomous as they explore the environment.”

After collaborating with the team to support the children’s learning and development, Aimee has introduced heuristic baskets, including open ended resources to promote curiosity as well as discovery for the infants and toddlers, where they can explore natural, wooden and real-life materials. Aimee and the team engage in sensitive observation to learn about and understand more deeply children’s play and how they engage in their environment. It is this deep and sensitive observation that supports on-going planning as well as the educators’ ability to be highly attuned and responsive to children’s cues.

Our centre managers are awesome.

Like Cindy from our Discovery House Centre in Canberra.Cindy’s story reminds us that although we all operate individually, we are part of the wider Gowrie family.

After 17 years working for Gowrie in Tasmania, Cindy joined Gowrie NSW to become the Centre Manager for our first centre in the ACT – the Gowrie Discovery House Early Education and Care Centre.

The centre may be new, but the Manager has a solid history of pedagogy in her toolbox.
